Precautions re: Mammograms and Dental X-Rays

Recently, Dr. Oz had a show on the fastest growing cancer in women, thyroid cancer. It was a very interesting program and he mentioned that the increase could possibly be related to the use of dental xrays and mammograms. He demonstrated that on the protective apron the dentist puts on you for your dental x-rays there is a little flap that can be lifted up and wrapped around your neck to protect your thyroid. Many dentists don’t offer it to their patients. Also, there is something called a “thyroid guard” for use during mammograms. You may need to ask for this, as well, if it is not offered.

As always, patients need to be assertive in asking for these and other precautions. And, it is always important to talk over health matters like this with your primary care physician, to be sure what you are requesting is indicated and will not interfere with the x-rays needed.

Blessings, and stay healthy!
