2012 – A Time of Change?
How should we prepare? We are at the beginning of 2012, a year that many people consider especially significant. As I understand it, December 21st will mark the end of a cycle on the Mayan calendar, and our sun will be in a unique position in relation to the Milky Way Galaxy. This is interpreted by some as marking an apocalypse or a great shift in conditions and/or consciousness here on planet earth. In the online encyclopedia “Wikipedia,” it says that, according to the Mayan calendar, December 21, 2012 actually marks the end of the current (13th) “baktun” (each of which is 144,000 days long) and the beginning of a new “baktun.” It is considered a time of celebration for Mayans.
I confess that I am no expert on such things, and I am a skeptic when it comes to predictions. Humankind has been trying to predict the future for a long time with little success. I also believe that the choices we make, both individually and collectively, have more to do with our future than the position of the sun.
However, I do believe that there is a real shift taking place in the consciousness of the human family. Our consciousness as spiritual beings is revealing itself more fully. Do I think that 2012 is significant in the unfolding of that consciousness? Absolutely. And I also think that 2011 was significant and today is significant. There is no time like the present and there is no time but the present when it comes to doing the spiritual work that is ours to do.
How should we prepare? By applying a formula that has proved its worth throughout the millennia: let’s make today as meaningful and significant as we are able. Is this the year to spend some more time in meditation or in service or in spiritual study? Absolutely. It seems to me that it is a good year to celebrate the goodness of God and the unity of all creation. I think that thoughtful Mayans would approve.
In the Spirit,
Rev. Tom
